You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quite still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.
-- Franz Kafka

One Good Reason

A small collection of songs by Randy Weeks

"It's simple!" How many times have you heard that in response to a plea for help with something? Whether it's a particularly arduous and unpleasant task at work or learning to ski or ride a bike for the first time, we tend to react to that remark with an odd mixture of envy, aggravation and relief. 'Quick, show me, let's get this over with.'

All of life should be as simple as learning to ride a bike. I remember assuring my daughter, when she was first trying to forego the training wheels, that soon this bike thing would be easy, second nature, simpler than walking. Her trembling lip and white-knuckled grip on the handlebars (and on me if I drifted more than a stride away) told me she was feeling an odd mixture of fear, hope and a fair amount of disbelief. In a week, though, she was laying patches in the street in front of our house.

So why do we make it harder than it has to be? Consider that the best and most important things in life, the parts we treasure most in the long run, are the simplest. Time with your kids, a love note tucked in your lunch bag, an embrace in the night that awakens you from a bad dream, knowledge of a job well done, time spent with a good friend when one or both of you really needs it. No sane person is gonna mourn on his death bed, 'I wish I'd watched more TV .... Sure feel bad about not closing that deal 15 years ago... always meant to learn to program that VCR of mine.'

I'd like to know that I've really been friends with the people in my life, that I learned a lot about them. That seems simple enough, but we sometimes get so caught up in trying to have a good life that the best things in our lives are ignored. I haven't breathed long enough to be real good at life yet, but I know what I want: To grow into the knowledge of what is true success, and enjoy the life I have today without worrying how it will be tomorrow.

This is a simple recording of simple songs. Mostly about love, heartbreak, reconciliation and life as a parent. You'll not likely have your life changed by them, but if, in listening, you find yourself thinking how precious your own child is, or how dear a loved one is to you, that'll be just fine.

"To laugh often and much. To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children. To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty. To find the best in others. To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition. To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." ----Ralph Waldo Emerson
